A champagne
celebration for 36 years of Floral Design Institute staff and friends featured walls
of orchids, a timeline of FDI history, photos and memorabilia reaching back to 1969,
and maps pinpointing the thousands students from around the world who have attended FDI. A favorite part of the evening was viewing the
fantastic and, in some cases, outrageous body flowers worn by the celebrants.
Hitomi
Gilliams design presentation was fabulous. Talk
about design courage! Hitomi is not afraid to
step out and try something new, a design that she has never tried before, and in front of
an audience. I am in awe of Hitomis
command of balance in design. Be sure and
check out the photos on our web site and you will see what I mean. Rather than use regular vases, Hitomi
explored our photography prop shelves for vases and containers. My very favorite was the simple design
created with two square black dinner plates, some small ceramic black rock
vases and lots of copper wire. The rock vases
were attached to each plate with a spider-web of wire.
The two plates, separated by a distance of three feet were tied together
with a bridge of Callas and Weeping Willow branches. Wow! What an elegant display of design tension and
balance. |
