In the above design, Oriental "Le Reve" lilies set the stage for a dramatic and stunning focal area. Within the focal area, vibrant "Hot Princess" roses and dense pink hydrangea accentuate its beauty. Around the accent area, flowers burst from the binding area in a wild and looser placement allowing the eye to spread outward quickly. In summary, color and visual impact create emphasis within the focal area of this design.

Traditionally, accent is defined as the center of attention, or the focal point in the design. The focal point is the area of most importance or greatest impact within a design.  An area of dominance to which the eye is drawn.  This is usually the point from which the design originates.   The focal point can be created with color, size of flower, or grouping of flowers. A focal point  is a single point of dominate interest within a design.  A focal area is an area within a design where more than one material, or multiples of a single material add emphasis or visual weight to the floral design

A more contemporary definition of accent is a single or recurring detail that adds interest to the overall floral design.  If you want to emphasize  something in one area, you would do it with accent. Rather than the dominate feature, it is an enhancement of the dominate feature.
